Santorini is the southern-east island of the Cyclades and is built on cliffs. The island has the particularity to be close to an active volcano, that created the island, as we know it today, and participated in its long history and its evolving shape, adding small islands all around it through the eruptions. Today there is Thira (the main island), Thera, Therasia, Aspronisi, Palea and Nea Kameni all around it.
Santorini is mostly known for its breath-taking view of the blue and white houses with the narrow alleyways, the churches with blue cupolas and the infinite blue sea. This architecture of Cyclades is the perfect contrast to the red, grey and black volcanic rocks.
Fira is the graphic capital of Santorini, on the west coast of the island, at 10km of the port. It is built at 260 m above sea level, on the edge of the Caldera cliffs, enabling us to have such a view. When walking around the city, you will find plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to remind you that you are on one of the most cosmopolitan islands in the Cyclades.
The city of Oia is another must-see destination with carved houses in the lava rocks, easily reachable by car and offering you another perfect spot to enjoy the most breathtaking sunset of the world.
If you are interested in archaeological sites, you must visit Akrotiri, which is the most important one in Greece. There was discovered a prehistoric settlement under the volcano ashes. The volcanic material that covered the city and the entire island, reshaped it and protected the buildings and everything inside them to this day.
During your stay, you have to schedule this one in a lifetime excursion to the volcano island, Nea Kameni. You can take the boat from Skala, the old port of Santorini, to visit the place or even for a one-day cruise, to swim in the crystal blue waters, and in the hot springs.
A big asset of the island is its unique sunsets, making all visitors run to Caldera for the experience. Less known but such beautiful places, giving a wonderful view over the Aegean sea are the Akrotiri and Messa Mountain, Pyrgos, Karterades, Emporio, Ammoudi, Finikia, Perissa, Perivolos, Megalochori, Kamari, Mesaria and Monolithos.
Santorini is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway, preferred by many for an unforgettable wedding, on the top of a volcanic island.
